About this digital tool
The Roman numeral converter turns Arabic numbers into Roman numerals and vice versa. In one mode you enter a whole number, e.g. 2026, and get MMXXVI; in the other you enter a Roman numeral, e.g. MCMXCIV, and get the value 1994. Numbers from 1 to 3999 are supported.
The symbols are I = 1, V = 5, X = 10, L = 50, C = 100, D = 500 and M = 1000. A smaller symbol before a larger one is subtracted (IV = 4, IX = 9, XL = 40, CM = 900), otherwise it is added. So MCMXCIV = 1000 + 900 + 90 + 4 = 1994. Roman numerals are still seen on clocks, book chapters, monarchs, centuries, films and sporting events. The converter saves you the trouble of working it out by hand.
How to use
- Enter the Arabic number (e.g. 2026) to get the Roman form.
- Or enter the Roman numeral (e.g. MMXXVI) to get the value.
- Both fields update automatically.
Frequently asked questions
Why do Roman numerals stop at 3999?
The standard Roman system has no symbols for above 3999 without special marks (overlines), so the usual conversion covers 1–3999.
How is the year 2026 written in Roman numerals?
2026 = MM (2000) + XX (20) + VI (6), so MMXXVI.
What are the symbols of Roman numerals?
I = 1, V = 5, X = 10, L = 50, C = 100, D = 500, M = 1000. All numbers are formed from combinations of them.
How is MCMXCIV read?
M = 1000, CM = 900, XC = 90, IV = 4. In all 1000 + 900 + 90 + 4 = 1994.
