Tip: Paste grades or values straight from Excel — separating with commas, spaces or new lines works the same.

About this digital tool

The average calculator takes a list of numbers and instantly gives the mean, median, mode, sum, minimum and maximum value, range and standard deviation. Just enter the numbers separated by commas, spaces or new lines; the calculator shows how many numbers it read.

The mean is the sum divided by the number of values, the median is the middle value once the numbers are sorted, and the mode is the value that appears most often. For the numbers 4, 8, 6, 5, 3, 8 the sum is 34, the mean 34 ÷ 6 = 5.67, the median (5 + 6) ÷ 2 = 5.5 and the mode 8. It is used for school grades, measurement data, prices and any quick statistical analysis.

How to use

  1. Enter the numbers (separated by commas, spaces or lines).
  2. The calculator instantly produces all the statistics.
  3. See the mean, median, mode, range and standard deviation.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between the mean and the median?

Mean = sum ÷ number of values. Median = the middle value when sorted. The median is not affected by extreme values.

What is the mode?

The mode is the value that appears most often. There may be no mode (unique values) or several (multimodal).

How is the median found when there is an even number of values?

Sort the numbers and take the average of the two middle values. E.g. for 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 8 the median is (5 + 6) ÷ 2 = 5.5.

When is the median used instead of the mean?

When some values are very different from the rest. For 1, 2, 3, 100 the mean is 26.5, but the median is 2.5 and represents the group better.
