About this digital tool
The golf handicap calculator works out your Handicap Index from recent scores and course ratings. Enter your scores, each with the gross score, Course Rating and Slope Rating, one row per round, up to 20 rounds.
For each round the tool calculates the differential: (113 ÷ Slope) × (score − Course Rating). It then takes the best differentials according to the WHS table, from 1 for 3–5 rounds up to 8 for 20 rounds, and takes their average. It is a simplified version without extra adjustments and without PCC, so it serves as an estimate, not an official handicap. It is useful for players tracking progress and comparing different courses.
How to use
- Enter your scores (adjusted gross score)
- Enter the Course Rating and Slope of each course
- The calculator finds the Score Differentials
- Pick the best 8 of the last 20
- See your Handicap Index
Frequently asked questions
How is the handicap calculated?
Score Differential = (113 / Slope Rating) × (Adjusted Gross Score - Course Rating). Handicap Index = the average of the best 8 differentials from the last 20 rounds × 0.96.
What is Slope Rating?
It measures the relative difficulty of the course for players with a handicap (not scratch). Values: 55 (very easy) to 155 (very hard). Average: 113. The higher it is, the harder the course for amateur players.
How many strokes do I get on a particular course?
Course Handicap = Handicap Index × (Slope Rating / 113) + (Course Rating - Par). E.g., HI 18 on a course with Slope 130 and CR 72, Par 72: CH = 18 × (130/113) = ~21 strokes.
How many rounds are needed to calculate a handicap?
At least 3 rounds. With 3–5 rounds the best differential is used, and with 20 rounds the best 8 are used. The tool requires a minimum of 3 to give a result.
