About this digital tool
The fraction calculator adds, subtracts, multiplies and divides two fractions and gives the result simplified, together with the decimal value. Enter the numerator and denominator of each fraction, choose the operation and the result appears instantly.
To add fractions with different denominators, a common denominator is found: 1/2 + 1/3 = 3/6 + 2/6 = 5/6. For multiplication, numerators are multiplied together and denominators together, while division is done by multiplying by the inverted fraction. Finally the fraction is simplified by the greatest common divisor. It is useful for students, for recipes with halves and quarters and for measurements in construction.
How to use
- Enter the numerator and denominator of the first fraction.
- Choose the operation (+, −, ×, ÷).
- Enter the second fraction and see the simplified result.
Frequently asked questions
How is the result simplified?
The numerator and denominator are divided by their greatest common divisor. E.g. 6/8 simplifies to 3/4.
How do I add fractions with different denominators?
Find a common denominator and expand each fraction. E.g. 1/4 + 1/6: the common denominator is 12, so 3/12 + 2/12 = 5/12.
How do I multiply two fractions?
Multiply the numerators together and the denominators together, then simplify. E.g. 2/3 × 3/4 = 6/12 = 1/2.
How do I divide fractions?
Dividing by a fraction is multiplying by the inverted fraction. E.g. 1/2 ÷ 3/4 = 1/2 × 4/3 = 4/6 = 2/3.
