Simple tools for everyday life.

Long Division Calculator

Perform long division step by step with an explanation of each operation.

Tip: Long division also works with decimal numbers — just move the decimal point in both numbers until the divisor becomes a whole number.

About this digital tool

The long division calculator divides two whole numbers and shows the solution step by step, as you would write it in a notebook. Enter the dividend and the divisor and get the quotient, the remainder and the steps with the digits brought down and the differences at each step.

Long division takes the digits of the dividend one by one, finds how many times the divisor goes in and subtracts. For example 7845 ÷ 12: 78 ÷ 12 = 6 (remainder 6), bring down 4 and 64 ÷ 12 = 5 (remainder 4), bring down 5 and 45 ÷ 12 = 3 (remainder 9). The quotient is 653, the remainder 9. It is ideal for students learning the algorithm, for parents helping with homework and for checking calculations by hand.

How to use

  1. Enter the number to be divided (the dividend)
  2. Enter the divisor
  3. Click 'Calculate'
  4. See each step of the algorithm with an explanation
  5. See the final result with or without remainder

Frequently asked questions

How does long division work?

Steps: (1) Take the digits of the dividend from the left, (2) Find how many times the divisor goes in, (3) Multiply and subtract, (4) Bring down the next digit, (5) Repeat until the digits run out.

What do I do with the remainder?

The remainder can be expressed as a whole number (e.g. 17 ÷ 5 = 3 remainder 2), as a fraction (3 2/5), or as a decimal (3.4) by continuing the algorithm with extra zeros.

Does it work with decimal numbers?

Yes. E.g., 7.56 ÷ 1.2: multiply both by 10 → 75.6 ÷ 12, then do the normal division. Result: 6.3.

How do I check the result of a division with a remainder?

Multiply the quotient by the divisor and add the remainder: you should get the dividend back. For 7845 ÷ 12: 653 × 12 + 9 = 7845.
